At first glance the name Perfect Pervis can look strange to most people. I promise you will get accustomed to it over time, and either love it or hate it, there is no in between. As a relatively young man from the great state of Texas, where football is life, I have a deep love for the best sport ever created. A native of a small town named Texas City (yes, that’s really the name), I have played football for more than 25 years, and have travelled to 5 countries on 3 different continents to contribute to the sport of American Football.
An American Finding Football in Finland
During my travels, I met a young women while playing football in Finland. One year later, we were married in Galveston, Texas. In a blink of an eye, I was living in Finland wondering why someone had stolen the sun!
Luckily, I had the opportunity to be the Head Coach of a local football team in the area (Kotka Eagles). As a coach for a lower level team, it was a natural progression for me to begin watching games all over Finland. As I became more comfortable with my surroundings and engaging with people involved with football, I started to write about the games I was attending on my newly founded blog site, PerfectPervis.com.
Finding My Audience
While maintaining my personal site, I also became a contributing writer for the American Football International website. You can find various articles under my name regarding football in Finland, as well as interviews with import players all over Europe. In addition to writing about international football, I spent a short time writing about the NFL for The Inside Zone, a website based in the United Kingdom. Recently, I have joined The Podyum as a content writer and business development associate.
Not Just a Writer, A Media Personality?
As much as I enjoy writing about football, in this current social climate, media is so much more than words. As I stated before, I’m a relatively young man, so I keep up with the times! As a co-founder and co-host, I spent 8 months as part of the Sports Politicen video podcast show. This was my first experience with podcasting, as I joined a group of Americans each week discussing hot topics in sports. In true Perfect Pervis fashion, I was not on one, but TWO podcasts during the same time frame. In addition to talking sports with Americans, I joined The Inside Zone audio podcast discussing the NFL season weekly. Sadly, I had to leave both of these podcasts due to time constraints and the reality that Finland is in its own world. But the experiences were invaluable to my development, including help me begin my own podcast in Finland, American Football in Finland, which is an audio podcast that needs no explanation. AFF is a huge success in Finland and releases a new episode every Wednesday (if you happen to be interested). And, because I have an addiction to working hard, I host Podyum Live interviews on facebook every Tuesday and Thursday. Feel free to watch and leave a comment as I talk to different players and coaches from all over the world.
Social Media
I’m on the cusp of being a millennial, depending on my mood, so of course I have a semi-decent social media presence. My twitter @perfectpervis is a very random string of football related article links. My Instagram @perfectpervis is a more fun loving view of the world of Football and my personal life in Finland. My facebook page @perfectpervis24 shares football information that impacts my lifestyle, as well as lots of self-promotion (that’s the millennial in me).
HALFTIME SHOW
I feel like if you have read this much, you might need a break, so enjoy
What are my intentions?
If you read the first part of this post, congratulations! You must already love Perfect Pervis! I promise I don’t intend to take up too much more of your precious time. My intentions are pretty simple: I want to help expand the sport of American Football. To do this, I have to get in where I fit in. After spending so much time as a player and coach, I think my biggest impact in football has come from my writing and media work. By coming to this conclusion, I have decided to step away from coaching and playing in 2018, to focus on supporting the sport through media contribution.
My Contribution to Football
As an American living in Finland, I have learned one important thing: Scandinavia/The Nordics (excuse my ignorance for not knowing the difference between the two) has its own culture separate from the rest of Europe. So my line of thinking is, how can I help football in the Nordics? The short answer is, tell the world what’s going on here!![]()
First Stop: Finland
Writing about Finland led to me contributing for two of the major authorities on international football, in turn giving Finland more exposure around the world. I’m basically taking credit for the increase in Finnish players playing abroad, Finnish teams playing more international games, and there being over 100 imported players wanting to play in Finland every year. Now I know I’m not the reason for all this, but I’ll be damned if I’m not the one to tell the world about it!
Finnish DOES NOT, I repeat, DOES NOT, translate well into English. Therefore, the international football community must rely on a small amount of English information to understand what’s going on in Finland. I have tried to give the community as much additional information as I can muster, and believe it has been helpful.
Phase Two: Sweden
If I were to compare my intentions to a well devised plan, as my residence country, Finland would be phase one. That would make Sweden phase two! Being involved with football in Finland and of course taking notice of Europe, I have crossed some information about Sweden over the years. Recently, I was even in Stockholm for that lopsided Suomi-Sverige National team friendly last year in the rain. I think Sweden gets a similar rep to Finland in terms of information distribution internationally. But I have heard that the spoken English, and translation is much better in Sweden. I look forward to helping add to the community that is football in Sweden.
What’s Next
This post is long enough for anyone reading to pick up on my specific writing style. I’m an American, so of course I write with that same type of entitlement all Americans possess. I am a true Texas boy, so I include phrases and saying that are typically heard in the south (except when that autocorrect/spell check gets me). I hope that my brutally honest opinions and analysis will add value to what the Swedish Football Network is already doing here. I would apologize for the length of this post, but what you see is what you get. And from now on you will be seeing a lot of Perfect Pervis.
